As part of the 2022 Bond program, the high schools below will receive upgrades to their athletic fields. These projects primarily provide practice facilities for high school athletics while also supporting middle school games and track meets. They will also provide space for fine arts competitions and training and use for PE as required.

A Campus Architectural Team (CAT) has been formed to provide input on the projects. Members include district staff, athletic coordinators and principals from each campus. CAT meetings are open to the public and up to five minutes of public comment will be allowed per meeting with a limit of one minute per speaker. Meeting dates are posted on the 2022 Bond Calendar.

Community Update

As part of the voter-approved 2022 Bond Program, all Austin ISD comprehensive high schools will receive artificial turf and other athletic field improvements such as lighting. Funds were released in March 2023 for the Construction Management Department to begin hiring design teams. The design contracts were completed in October 2023.

While the district originally aimed to complete the first few fields by the end of Summer 2024, installation of artificial turf is a complex process that requires extensive design and permitting. Each high school site also presents unique challenges including steep topography, floodplain issues, and/or coordination with the design of modernization projects also funded through the 2022 Bond Program.

Status as of July 2025: 

  • Construction is underway at eight campuses: LBJ ECHS, Northeast ECHS / International HS, Navarro ECHS, LASA, Akins ECHS, Austin HS, Bowie HS, and McCallum HS. 
    • Estimated opening dates are subject to change based on weather and other factors like complexity of the site, unforeseen construction conditions, utility coordination, and soil preparation processes.
  • Construction is anticipated to begin in March 2026 at Anderson HS.
  • The remaining two projects, Crockett Early College High School and Travis Early College High School, will be permitted and constructed with the modernization projects.
